It is with tremendous sadness that we have to report the passing of the group’s Honorary President, Alan “Roy” Charlesworth at the grand old age of 99.
Roy’s involvement with the group started in the late 1960’s, serving on the Executive Committee for many years, then becoming Honorary President in 1984. Perhaps Roy’s biggest achievements were having the foresight to fence in the land that the Boathouse now stands on, ultimately gaining the title by squatter’s rights. He also secured the Freehold for the land that the Den sits on by hard negotiations after a change of landowner. The group’s very existence owes so much to these actions and Roy’s passion for, and commitment to, the 1st Oulton Broad.
Rest in Peace Roy and thank you for everything you did for us.
The picture shows Roy cutting a cake with Scout Leader Keith Prior and Beaver, Tommy Best, to celebrate the Group’s 75th Anniversary and the opening of the new Boathouse in 2013.
